Design 1706 - Challenge

This big aluminum sloop was built by Burger Boat of Wisconsin. She is constructed of aluminum and launched in 1963.

This press release tells the story better than I can.

Here are a couple of articles from the time.

I love this image with the submarine.

Here are the plans.

Some interior images.

Some exterior images.

Principal Dimensions
LOA 64'-4"
LWL 45'-0"
Beam 14'-0"
Draft 8'-10"
Displacement 65,000 lbs
Ballast 29,000 lbs

  1. Those vents on the dorade boxes are unique.

  2. Looking at the plans in greater detail (and at a larger scale) I can see they are for powered vent blowers as follows:
starboard forward - galley range hood
port forward - head vent blower
starboard aft - engine room vent blower
port aft - head vent blower

  3. Any Idea as to where Challenge is now?

    1. I will like also know where she is....

    2. She just got a rebuild, I think in San Diego....

    3. When we charted challenge in the mid seventies she was still owned by "Fleet wood mack" She was beautiful and a delight to sail.

  4. Do you know who owns the copyrights on these photos or if higher quality images exist. I would love to have the sub photo hanging on my wall.
